What We Believe / Bethel Bible Constitution / Bethel Bible Constitutional ByLaws Bethel Bible Church: Statement of Faith and Doctrine - Download files to your computer The members of Bethel Bible Church subscribe to the following: Section 1 - THE HOLY SCRIPTURES. We believe the Holy Scriptures of the Old and New Testaments to be the verbally inspired Word of God, the final authority for faith and life, inerrant in the original writings, infallible and God-breathed. 2 Timothy 3:16-17. Section 2 - THE GODHEAD. We believe that there is one living and true God, an infinite, intelligent Spirit, and that in the unity of the Godhead there are three persons, the Father, the Son and the Holy Spirit, equal in every divine perfection, executing distinct but harmonious offices in the work of redemption. Matthew 28:18,19; Deuteronomy 6:4. Section 3 - THE PERSON AND WORK OF CHRIST. a. We believe that the Lord Jesus Christ, the Eternal Son of God, became man, without ceasing to be God, having been conceived by the Holy Spirit, and born of the Virgin Mary, in order that He might reveal God and redeem sinful men. Genesis 3:6-24; Romans 5:12; Isaiah 53:6; Ephesians 2:1-3. b. We believe that the Lord Jesus Christ accomplished our redemption through His death on the Cross as a representative, vicarious, substitutionary sacrifice; and that our justification is made sure by His literal, physical resurrection from the dead. Romans 3:24,25; 1 Peter 2:24. c. We believe that the Lord Jesus Christ ascended to heaven, and is now exalted at the right hand of God, where, as our High Priest, He fulfils the ministry of Representative, Intercessor and Advocate. Acts 1:9, 10; Hebrews 9:24, 7:25; 1 John 2:1-2. Section 4 - THE PERSON AND WORK OF THE HOLY SPIRIT a. We believe that the Holy Spirit is a person who convicts the world of sin, of righteousness, and of judgment; and that He is the Supernatural Agent in regeneration, baptizing all believers into the body of Christ, in-dwelling and sealing them unto the day of redemption. John 16:8-11; 1 Corinthians 12:12-14; Romans 8:9; Ephesians 1:13 J4. b. We believe that He is the Divine Teacher who guides believers into all Truth; and, that it is the privilege and duty of all the saved to be filled with the Spirit. John 16:13; Ephesians 5:18. Section 5 - THE TOTAL DEPRAVITY OF MAN. We believe that man was created in the image and likeness of God, but that in Adam's sin the race fell, inherited a sinful nature, and became alienated from God; and that man is totally depraved, and, of himself, utterly unable to remedy his lost condition. Genesis 1:26-27; Romans 3:22,23; 5:12. Section 6 - SALVATION. We believe that salvation is received by repentance of sin through personal faith in Jesus Christ as Lord and Saviour. John 1:12; Acts 20:21; Romans 4:5; Ephesians 1:7; 2:8-8. Section 7 - THE ETERNAL SECURITY AND ASSURANCE OF BELIEVERS. a. We believe that all the redeemed are kept by God's power and are thus secure in Christ forever. John 10:27-30; Romans 8:1,38,39; 1 Peter 1:5. b. We believe that it is the privilege of believers to rejoice in the assurance of their salvation through the testimony of God's Word; which, however, clearly forbids the use of Christian liberty as an occasion to the flesh. Romans 13:13,14; Galations 5:13; Titus 2:11-15. Section 8 - THE TWO NATURES OF THE BELIEVER. We believe that every saved person possesses two natures, with the provision made for victory of the new nature over the old nature through the power of the indwelling Holy Spirit; and, that all claims of the eradication of the old nature in this life are unscriptural. Romans 8:12, 13; Galations 5:16-25. Section 9 - SEPARATION. We believe that all the saved should live in such a manner as not to bring reproach upon their Saviour and Lord; and, that separation from all religious apostasy, all worldly and sinful pleasures, practices and associations is commanded of God. Romans 12:1,2; 2 Timothy 3:1-5; 1 John 2:15-17; 2Corinthians 6:14-18. Section 10 - MISSIONS. We believe that it is the obligation of the saved to witness by life and by word to the truths of the Holy Scriptures and to seek to proclaim the Gospel to all mankind. Acts 1:8; 2 Corinthians 5:19-20. Section 11 - THE MINISTRY AND SPIRITUAL GIFTS. a. We believe that God is sovereign in the bestowment of all His gifts; and, that the gifts of evangelists, pastors and teachers are sufficient for the perfecting of the saints today; and, that speaking in tongues and the working of sign miracles ceased as the New Testament Scriptures were completed and their authority became established. 1 Corinthians 12:4-11; 2 Corinthians 12:12; Ephesians 4:7-12. b. We believe that God does hear and answer the prayer of faith, in accord with His own Will, for the sick and afflicted. John 15:7; 1 John 5:14,15. Section 12 - THE CHURCH. We believe that the Church invisible is composed solely of all who by trusting faith in Christ are regenerated and sealed by the Holy Spirit; that the Church visible is a body of professing believers, associated in the covenant of faith and fellowship of the Gospel, observing the ordinances of Christ, governed by His laws and exercising the gifts, rites and privileges invested in them by His Word. 1 Corinthians 12:12-14; 2 Corinthians 11:2; Ephesians 1:22,23; 5:25-27; Acts 2:41, 42; 20:17,28-32; 1 Timothy 3:1-13; Titus 1:5-11. Section 13 - DISPENSATIONALISM. We believe in the dispensational view of Bible interpretation but reject that teaching which opposes either the Lord's Table or Water Baptism as a Scriptural means of testimony for the church of this age. Matthew 28:19,20; Acts 2:41, 42; 18:8; 1 Corinthians 11:23-26. Section 14 - THE ORDINANCES. We believe that our Lord Jesus Christ has left two ordinances to be observed by the Church. a. We believe in the ordinance of the Lord's Supper in which all believers by the sacred use of bread and the cup are to commemorate together the substitutionary death of Christ (till He come) preceded always by solemn self-examination. 1 Corinthains 11:23-28. b. We believe that Christian Baptism is the immersion in water of a believer in the name of God the Father, Jesus Christ the Son and the Holy Spirit; to show forth our identification with the crucified, dead, buried and risen Saviour, with its effect in our death to sin and resurrection to a new life in Christ Jesus. We believe that Baptism and the Lord's Supper are expressive ceremonies; having no saving qualities, and bestowing no saving grace on those who observe them; as expressly commanded in the Word of God. Acts 18:36-39; Matthew 3:5,6; Romans 6:4; Matthew 28:19; Colossians 2:12; Acts 2:41,42; Acts and Epistles. Section 15 - THE PERSONALITY OF SATAN. We believe that Satan is a person, the author of sin and the cause of the fall; that he is the open and declared enemy of God and man; and, that he shall be eternally punished in the Lake of Fire. Job 1:6, 7; Isaiah 14:12-17; Matthew 4:2-11; 25:41; Revelation 20:10. Section 16 - THE SECOND ADVENT OF CHRIST. We believe in that "Blessed Hope", the personal, imminent, pre-tribulation and premillennial coming of the Lord Jesus Christ for His redeemed ones, and in His subsequent return to earth, with His saints to establish His Millennial Kingdom. 1 Thessalonians 4:13-18; Zechariah 14:4-11; Revelation 19:11-16; 20:1-6; 1 Thessalonians 1:10; 5:9; Revelation 3:10. Section 17 - THE ETERNAL STATE. a. We believe in the bodily resurrection of all men, the saved to eternal life, and the unsaved to judgment and everlasting punishment. Matthew 25:46; John 5:28, 29; 11:25,26; Revelation 20:5,6,12,13. b. We believe that the souls of the redeemed are, at death, absent from the body and present with the Lord, where in conscious bliss they await the first resurrection, when spirit, soul and body are reunited to be glorified forever with the Lord. Luke 23:43; Revelation 20:4-6; 2 Corinthians 5:8; Philippians 1:23; 3:21; 1 Thessalonians 4:16, 17. c. We believe that the souls of the unbelievers remain after death, in conscious misery until the second resurrection when with soul and body reunited they shall appear at the Great White Throne Judgment, and shall be cast into the Lake of Fire, no to be annihilated, but to suffer everlasting conscious punishment. Luke 16:19-26; Matthew 25:41-46; 2 Thessalonians 1:7-9; Jude 6,7; Mark 9:43-48; Revelation 20:11-15. Section 18 - THE LORD'S DAY. We believe that the first day of the week is the Lord's Day; and it is to be kept sacred to religious purposes, by assembling together as commanded for the purpose of worship, instruction, evangelism, fellowship and Christian growth. Acts 20:7; Isaiah 58:13; Hebrews 10:24,25. Bethel Bible Church Constitution - Download files to your computer Preamble As a body of believers in the family of God, we establish and present the following as a public statement and visible expression of what we believe to be truth, and voluntarily submit ourselves to this Constitution and Bylaws. Article I Name: This body of believers shall be known as “BETHEL BIBLE CHURCH” of Evergreen Park, Illinois. Article II Authority: The government of this body of believers shall be vested in its membership and administered through the Elder Board. The Board is further discussed in Article III, Section 1 of the Bylaws. Article III Purpose: Our purpose as a community of believers is to glorify God our Father in our daily lives through Jesus Christ, by prayer, worship, fellowship, discipleship, ministry and evangelism. We desire to train and equip this body so that we can serve God in all facets of ministry, both materially and spiritually. The goal is to spread the gospel of Jesus Christ to those around us by proclaiming that they are loved by the Father, saved by the Son, and thereafter permanently indwelt with the Holy Spirit. Article IV Statement of Faith: The purpose of this Statement of Faith is to make known the biblical doctrines we, as members of this body, believe and teach. A. We believe all Scripture, both Old and New Testaments, is the inerrant, infallible, plenary and inspired Word of God useful for teaching, rebuking, correcting and training in righteousness. Therefore, we believe the Word of God to be the tool used to thoroughly equip us for every good work. (Psalm 119:160; II Timothy 3:16-17; II Peter 1:20-21) B. We believe that there is one living and true God, an infinite, intelligent spirit, the triune God of the Bible. He created all things, including the heavens and the earth, things seen and unseen. He upholds all things by the power of His word. It is in Him that we live and move and have our being. He is a personal God, in that He cares about our daily lives, and is actively at work in the world and in the lives of men, women and children today. God is a God of truth, who is without sin, and He is just and right and will judge the world. (Genesis 1; Deuteronomy 32:4; Psalm 9:8; Isaiah 44:6 & 24; Jeremiah 10:10a; John 17:3; Acts 17:28; Colossians 1:15-17; Hebrews 1:3; Revelation 4:11) C. We believe in one God, who infinitely and eternally exists in the unity of the Godhead as three distinct persons: the Father, the Son and the Holy Spirit. We believe that all three persons of the Trinity, having the same attributes, are identical in nature and equal in power and glory, yet with distinct roles. (Deuteronomy 6:4; Matthew 28:19; John 10:30; II Corinthians 13:14) D. We believe that God the Father, the first person of the Trinity, is the Father over all creation, the Father to the Son, Jesus Christ, and the Father to all believers. (I Corinthians 8:6A; Galatians 3:26; Galatians 4:4; Ephesians 1:3) E. We believe that Jesus Christ, the second person of the Trinity and the Son of God, became man, being born of the Virgin Mary. He alone is the only way for man to be reconciled to God. All people, although loved by God, need Jesus Christ to be their Savior. We believe that the shed blood of Jesus on the cross and His resurrection three days later provide the only way to salvation. Therefore, salvation is by grace through faith in Jesus Christ alone. By receiving the gift of salvation, our identity in Christ gives us the significant position as children of God. We have been set free from sin, being born again, and are new creations. We are God’s cherished possessions and treasures, and therefore, we have an eternal home in heaven. Those who receive Jesus Christ as their personal Lord and Savior become eternally secure as children of God. (Matthew 1:18-23; John 1:12-13; John 3:16; John 10:28-29; John 14:6; Acts 16:31; Romans 3:22-24; Romans 10:9-10; I Corinthians 15:3-4; Ephesians 2:8-9; Philippians 2:5-11; I Timothy 2:3-6; I Peter 3:18; I John 4:10; I John 4:14) F. We also believe that the Holy Spirit, the third person of the Trinity, immediately indwells the believer at the moment of salvation. The Holy Spirit convicts, guides, instructs, fills, comforts and empowers the believer to live a Christ-centered life. (John 14:26; John 16:7-8; Romans 8:9; Ephesians 1:13-14) G. We believe that man was created in the image of God, but sin entered the world through temptation by Satan, a fallen angel, which resulted in the fall of Adam and Eve. Since that time, the penalty of sin is a physical and spiritual separation from God. Because man has sinned and fallen short of the glory of God, man needs to be redeemed. There is nothing man can do to redeem himself from this lost condition. We believe that Satan and his demons are real. They are always at work trying to deceive and destroy and are in every way opposed to God. (Genesis 1:26-27; Genesis 3; Romans 3:23; Ephesians 6:12; I Peter 5:8) H. We believe that there is a heaven where all believers in Jesus Christ will spend eternity with Him. He is there now preparing a place for us, as He sits at the right hand of the Father in heaven, always interceding for us. We believe that those who have put their faith in the shed blood of Jesus Christ for their salvation will immediately, upon death, be in the presence of the Lord Jesus in heaven. We also believe that there is a hell, a place of real torment, originally prepared for the devil and his demons, where all those who reject salvation through Jesus Christ will spend eternity apart from Him. (Matthew 25:41; Matthew 25:46; John 14:2-4; II Corinthians 5:8; I Thessalonians 4:16-17; II Thessalonians 1:8-9; Hebrews 1:3; Hebrews 7:25; Hebrews 8:1; Revelation 20:10-15) I. We believe that God uses the Church as His primary way of accomplishing His purposes on earth. The Church is made up of the body of believers, with Christ being the head. (I Corinthians 1:2; I Corinthians 12:12-27; Ephesians 3:10-11; Ephesians 4:15-16) J. We believe that there are two ordinances established in the Bible: baptism by immersion and the Lord’s Supper. Scripture shows that people were baptized immediately after personally receiving forgiveness of sin through accepting Jesus Christ. Believer’s baptism shall serve as an act of obedience to the command of Jesus, as well as a public statement of faith. The Lord’s Supper is observed as a reminder and a symbol of His broken body and shed blood on the cross. These ordinances are in no way to be regarded as a means of salvation. (Matthew 3:16; Matthew 28:19; Luke 22:14-20; Acts 8:12; Acts 8:26-39; Acts 10:48; I Corinthians 11:23-29) K. We believe that, as believers in Jesus Christ, we are called to be good stewards of all God has given us. Everything we own and all we are belongs to God. We have been given the responsibility to manage those things that God has given us. (I Chronicles 29:11-12; I Timothy 6:17-19; I Corinthians 10:26; Psalms 50:10-12) L. We believe in the sanctity of life and that all human life is sacred including unborn children from the moment of conception until natural death. We also believe in the sanctity of marriage, ideally this is a lifelong union between only one man and only one woman. We believe that God hates divorce, and that a husband and wife should live in harmony with each other, seeking always to be reconciled to one another. We believe that no intimate sexual activity outside of God’s pattern for marriage is acceptable. For example, uses of pornography and expressions of homosexuality are deviations of God’s plan for sex. (Genesis 2:24; Leviticus 18:5-26; Psalm 139:13-17; Jeremiah 1:5; Malachi 2:15-16a; Matthew 19:4-9; Romans 1:26-30; I Corinthians 7:1-16; Hebrews 13:4) M. We believe that one day our risen Lord and Savior Jesus Christ will return for His Church as He promised. This event is known as the rapture. At that time, He will meet His people in the air, and we will be forever with the Lord. We also believe that the rapture is imminent. After seven years of great tribulation, Christ will return to earth and establish His reign for one thousand years, during which time Satan will be bound. At the end of this time, Satan will once again be loosed and defeated and all unbelievers will be judged and cast into the Lake of Fire along with Satan and his demons. Christ’s eternal kingdom will become the permanent home for the believer. (Zechariah 14:1-11; Matthew 25:31-46; John 5:28-29; I Corinthians 15:20-28; I Corinthians 15:50-52; I Thessalonians 4:13-5:2; Revelation 20-22) N. We believe that the first day of the week is the Lord’s Day. It is to be kept sacred by assembling together for the purposes of worship, evangelism, fellowship and spiritual growth. (Acts 20:7; Isaiah 58:13; Hebrews 10:24 & 25; I Corinthians 16:1-2) O. We believe that the Scriptures, interpreted in their natural, literal sense, reveal divinely determined dispensations, or rules of life, which define man’s responsibilities in successive ages. These dispensations are not ways of salvation, but rather divinely ordered stewardships by which God directs man according to His purpose. Three of these are the age of law, the age of the church and the age of the millennial kingdom. (John 1:17; 2 Corinthians 3:9-18 KJV; Galatians 3:13-25; Ephesians 1:10; Ephesians 3:2-10; Colossians 1:24-25; Hebrews 7:19; Revelation 20:2-6) Article V Membership: All who profess a personal faith in the Lord Jesus Christ, and who give evidence through their testimony and the conduct of their daily lives, shall be considered for membership in accordance with this Constitution and Bylaws. A person considering membership should be in agreement with the above mentioned authority, purpose and faith statements. Article I of the Bylaws contains further detailed information regarding membership. These activities may include, but are not limited to, the following: 1. spending time daily in the Word of God and in prayer (Psalm 119:9,11,18; Colossians 4:2; I Thessalonians 5:17-18) 2. spending time daily in personal and family devotions (Deuteronomy 6:4-9; Colossians 3:16) 3. attending church services on a regular basis (Psalm 122:1; Hebrews 10:23-25) 4. getting involved in small group Bible studies (Acts 17:11; II Timothy 2:15) 5. serving in areas of ministry (Romans 12:1-12) 6. committing to teach, train and nurture people in spiritual growth (Proverbs 22:6; III John 4; I Peter 5.2) C. Members are encouraged to support Bethel Bible Church by giving a portion of their income. (I Corinthians 16:2, II Corinthians 8:3, II Corinthians 9:6-7) E. Members are encouraged to live a life that reflects Jesus Christ, striving towards Christ-like living. Spiritual growth of the individual should be evident through the fruit of the Spirit which is recorded in Galatians 5:22-23 as “love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness and self-control.” F. Members are encouraged to be witnesses in their communities by carefully and consistently living in a manner worthy of Jesus Christ. (James 1:26-27) G. We believe that Scripture discourages Christians from bringing civil lawsuits against other Christians or the church to resolve personal disputes. God’s church has all of the resources necessary to resolve personal disputes between members. In seeking to reconcile differences, mediation and arbitration are to be sought rather than litigation. (I Corinthians 6:1-8; Ephesians 4:31-32) Section 4 ~ Rights/Privileges A. The voting age of membership shall be 18 years of age. B. Proxy and absentee voting is prohibited. C. Voting members are eligible to serve on any of the boards, subject to meeting the biblical qualifications outlined in Article III, Section 1-C, Section 2-C, and Section 5-B. D. Anyone removed from membership shall be notified in writing by the Church Clerk. C. Any member who wishes to be removed from membership shall inform the Elder Board in writing. D. Letters of transfer will be granted upon request, to departing members who are in good standing at Bethel Bible Church. E. It shall be within the scope of the Elder Board to review the church membership whenever they deem necessary. Section 6 ~ Church Discipline A. Bethel Bible Church shall make every effort to adhere to the principles set forth in Matthew 18:15-17, “If your brother sins against you, go and show him his fault, just between the two of you. If he listens to you, you have won your brother over. But if he will not listen, take one or two others along, so that every matter may be established by the testimony of two or three witnesses. If he refuses to listen to them, tell it to the church, and if he refuses to listen even to the church, treat him as you would an unbeliever.” B. The motivation behind discipline is love and ultimately restoration. 1. “Do everything in love.” (I Corinthians 16:14) 2. “Love must be sincere. Hate what is evil; cling to what is good. Be devoted to one another in brotherly love.” (Romans 12:9-10a) 3. ”My brothers, if one of you should wander from the truth and someone should bring him back, remember this: Whoever turns a sinner from the error of his way will save him from death and cover over a multitude of sins.” (James 5:19-20) C. If any member is found to consistently conduct himself in a manner that is in any way a direct violation of clear biblical commands, becomes divisive within this church body, and denies any of the doctrinal statements found in the Statement of Faith, the principles found in Matthew 18 shall set the standard for the following steps taken to help restore the brother or sister: 1. Personally approach the member one on one to confront the sin. If the member shows true repentance, no further action shall be taken. If he/she is unwilling to repent, continue with Step 2. We are warned in Galatians 6:1, “Brothers, if someone is caught in sin, you who are spiritual should restore him gently. But watch yourself, or you also may be tempted.” 2. Confront the member a second time, bringing one or two other fellow members with you as witnesses. If the member shows true repentance, no further action shall be taken. If the member once again is unwilling to repent, continue with step 3. 3. The particular matter being addressed shall be brought to the attention of the Elder Board. The Board members shall meet with the member in question to confront him/her and to see if there has been any evidence of repentance. If the Board determines that the member is unrepentant, they shall present the matter at a called, member only, congregational meeting. This is in accordance with I Timothy 5:20, “Those who sin are to be rebuked publicly, so that the others may take warning.” If the member still refuses to listen to biblical counsel, then continue with step 4. 4. The Elder Board may remove the person from membership by a majority vote of the Board, and then provide the reason in writing to the individual. We are told in II Thessalonians 3:6, 14-15, “In the name of the Lord Jesus Christ, we command you, brothers, to keep away from every brother who is idle and does not live according to the teaching you received from us . . . If anyone does not obey our instruction in this letter, take special note of him. Do not associate with him, in order that he may feel ashamed. Yet do not regard him as an enemy, but warn him as a brother.” 5. The Elder Board shall disclose to the congregation, at any called congregational business meeting, the action taken regarding any person who was disciplined and removed from membership. D. Any member is subject to the steps outlined above and may be removed from any role of pastor, board member, trustee, officer, ministry leader or any other role of service until the disciplinary issue is resolved. The resolution could be reinstatement, probation, permanent removal or variations thereof. Article II Ordinances of the Church Section 1 ~ Communion A. The Lord’s Supper shall be practiced on a regular basis. B. All believers who profess a saving faith in Jesus Christ are invited to partake in communion. C. Prior to receiving communion, one should take time for personal self-examination and confession of sin before the Lord. In this way, each believer might partake in the Lord’s Supper in a worthy manner. (I Corinthians 11:27-29) D. The Lord’s Supper is observed as a reminder of Jesus’ sacrificial death, with the elements serving only as a symbol of His broken body and shed blood on the cross. Section 2 ~ Baptism A. Baptism by immersion shall be the mode practiced by this body of believers. B. Baptism by immersion, which is symbolic of Jesus’ death, burial and resurrection, shall serve as an act of obedience to the command of Jesus and as a public statement of faith. (Matthew 3:6; Matthew 28:16-20; Luke 3:21-22; Romans 6:1-4; Colossians 2:11-12) C. Baptism by immersion is a requirement for membership into Bethel Bible Church. Article III Leadership Section 1 ~ Elder Board A. Purpose The purpose of the Elder Board is to provide the spiritual leadership of this church. This Board shall serve as overseers and shepherds of God’s flock as commanded in I Peter 5:1-4, “To the elders among you, I appeal as a fellow elder, a witness of Christ’s sufferings and one who also will share in the glory to be revealed: Be shepherds of God’s flock that is under your care, serving as overseers – not because you must, but because you are willing, as God wants you to be; not greedy for money, but eager to serve; not lording it over those entrusted to you, but being examples to the flock. And when the Chief Shepherd appears, you will receive the crown of glory that will never fade away.” B. Responsibilities 1. The Elder Board is accountable, first to the authority of Christ, who is the Head of the Church, and second, to the membership, as stated in Article II of the Constitution. They shall be responsible for teaching, encouraging and correcting this body according to scripture. (Titus 1:9) 2. The Board shall strive to stimulate the spiritual development of each individual, resulting in spiritual growth as a body of believers. (Ephesians 4:12-16) 3. The Elder Board shall hold regularly scheduled, monthly Board meetings. 4. The Elder Board shall be responsible for the interview and approval of prospective church members. 5. Qualifications 1. The Elder Board shall be selected and approved based upon the qualifications listed in the following two passages of scripture. a. I Timothy 3:1-7, “Here is a trustworthy saying: If anyone sets his heart on being an overseer, he desires a noble task. Now, the overseer must be above reproach, the husband of but one wife, temperate, self-controlled, respectable, hospitable, able to teach, not given to drunkenness, not violent but gentle, not quarrelsome, not a lover of money. He must manage his own family well and see that his children obey him with proper respect. (If anyone does not know how to manage his own family, how can he take care of God’s church?) He must not be a recent convert, or he may become conceited and fall under the same judgment as the devil. He must also have a good reputation with outsiders, so that he will not fall into disgrace and into the devil’s trap.” b. Titus 1:6-9, “An elder must be blameless, the husband of but one wife, a man whose children believe and are not open to the charge of being wild and disobedient. Since an overseer is entrusted with God’s work, he must be blameless – not overbearing, not quick-tempered, not given to drunkenness, not violent, not pursuing dishonest gain. Rather he must be hospitable, one who loves what is good, and who is self-controlled, upright, holy and disciplined. He must hold firmly to the trustworthy message as it has been taught, so that he can encourage others by sound doctrine and refute those who oppose it.” 2. All elders must be members of Bethel Bible Church. 3. All Pastors, once elected by the congregation, are automatically Elder Board members. D. Selection Process 1. The Elder Board shall establish a Nominating Committee each year for the purpose of creating a slate of candidates to fill positions that are vacant, or soon to be vacant. The Nominating Committee should consist of one elder, one deacon and three church members, but the actual size can be changed as needed, so long as the congregation is adequately represented. Efforts will be made to include some new Nominating Committee members in the process each year. Each Nominating Committee member shall prayerfully consider each candidate. 6. If the Nominating Committee determines that a candidate is not biblically qualified for the position, he shall be informed confidentially by the Committee as to the reason. Approval will be based on a majority vote of the current Elder Board members present at any one of their scheduled meetings. 8. The approved list of candidates shall be presented to the congregation no later than 30 days prior to the Annual Congregational Business Meeting, which shall be held on any Sunday during March. 9. Members will be asked to prayerfully consider each candidate, keeping in mind the qualifications found in I Timothy 3 and Titus 1. 10. A nominee or candidate may withdraw his name at any time during this process. 13. In the event of an unexpected vacancy, the Elder Board is responsible to evaluate the need of a replacement depending on the length of the remaining term. The Elder Board may make a temporary appointment if the remaining term is 3 months or less, or they may establish a Nominating Committee in order to fill a longer vacancy. E.
