What Is Awana?

Bethel Bible Church Awana Club is a Bible-centered children's ministry providing a weekly club for kindergarten through sixth grade boys and girls.  It is organized with the purpose of reaching boys and girls with the gospel of Christ and training them to serve Him.  Sparks is the Awana club for kindergarten, first and second grade children.  Truth and Training (T & T) is the club for third through sixth graders.

Awana began in 1950 as a youth program at the North Side Gospel Center in Chicago, Illinois.  Lance Latham, the church pastor, worked with Art Rorheim to develop a program that would appeal to young people, reach them with the gospel and train them in the Lord's work.  Other churches heard about the success of the Awana program and asked if they could use it.  By 1960, Awana had 900 registered clubs.  Today, Awana clubs are found throughout the United States and the world.

Awana is an acronym which stands for "Approved Workmen Are Not Ashamed", derived from 2 Timothy  2:15: "Do your best to present yourself to God as one approved, a workman who does not need to be ashamed and who correctly handles the word of truth." (NIV).

Our Awana evening consists of clubbers rotating with their teams through three exciting segments of the evening:  Handbook Time, Game Time and Council Time.

Handbook Time - During this segment, leaders and clubbers work together in small groups memorizing Bible verses.  Parents are encouraged to help their children memorize their Bible verses at home so the clubbers come prepared.

Game Time - Clubbers participate as team members in physical activities that develop team cooperation, good sportsmanship, coordination skills and self-confidence.  Although games are competitive in nature, teamwork, good self-esteem and FUN are the priorities.

Council Time - Clubbers come together as a group for a time of singing, announcements and recognition of awards earned.  A Bible lesson is presented, helping the clubbers learn more about God.

Throughout the Awana year, there are contests, special theme nights, a pinewood derby "Grand Prix" night and many other fun activities.

Proverbs 22:6 says, "Train a child in the way he should go, and when he is old he will not turn from it." (NIV).  Awana provides a strong Biblical foundation that will help provide direction for the clubbers throughout their entire lives.

Bethel Bible Church Awana Club meets on from September - early May, on Tuesday evenings, from 6:45 - 8:30pm
